Two years ago, I embarked on a new career as a trainee dental nurse. I’m proud to say that having passed my exams, I am now qualified.I feel so grateful for the opportunity that was given to me that I have decided to volunteer with the dental charity Bridge2Aid. The charity believes that everybody has the right to safe emergency dental care. By volunteering with them, I will be sharing the knowledge and skills I have gained over these past years. This, in turn, will help strengthen the local healthcare systems of the poorest communities in the developing world.
Through the charity, I will be travelling to Tanzania for two weeks as part of a team of dentists, hygienists and nurses. We will be responsible for the training of rural health workers who will learn basic dental treatments such as:
· Diagnosing dental conditions
· Administering local anaesthetic
· Extracting teeth
· Providing post-operative instructions
· Referring complicated cases
· Managing cross infection and safe sterilisation
· Delivering basic oral health promotion and prevention
· Giving advice on products that will help
· Identifying other oral problems
More than 70% of the world’s population have no access to the simplest dental pain relief. Our contribution with the charity Bridge 2 Aid — training local health workers with a new skill set of emergency dental care — will result in the continuation of safe and good work being carried out after we have returned back to the UK.
The money will go towards and cover:
· Flights and transfers
· Accommodation
· Food
· Transport during my time in Tanzania
· A supply of dental material and consumables during the project
· A donation to Bridge 2 Aid’s ongoing work
