Message from Alexa:
So, I need to start with an apology... I'm sorry for asking you to part with your hard earned cash once again. However, please hear me out... This time James and I, plus two of our best friends John and Ed, are taking on a different type of challenge to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Action. We'll be walking 100km of the Cotswolds Way - over 60 miles from Bath to Cheltenham, in 24 hours on 30th June. This is a ridiculously long way and will be a huge challenge for all of us. But, it's for a great cause and one that is very important to me.
My Mum is one of the few lucky survivors of Pancreatic Cancer. Here are some horrible stats about this killer disease:
- Just 5% of those who are diagnosed with it will survive past 5 years and most will be dead within 4-6 months.
- Pancreatic cancer is the 5th biggest cause of cancer death in the UK and it is set to become the 4th biggest by 2026.
- The survival statistics for pancreatic cancer have not changed markedly in nearly 50 years.
- Only 1% of pancreatic cancer patients live beyond 10 years.
- 26 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every day and 24 die every day.
Shocking figures I know, but perhaps the most shocking thing for me is that since this disease made an appearance in my family's world, both incidence rates and mortality rates continue to rise. It is the only common cancer in the UK for which this is the case. I personally feel the need to do something to raise awareness and to try to make a small difference in whatever way I can so that more people like my Mum, can beat pancreatic cancer and go on to live a full and healthy life!
Please give what you can, and I'll give what I can with my team of ‘merry’ men on the Cotswolds Way.
Thanks to James, John and Ed for agreeing to walk at my pace - lets do this! xxx
