Story
Please help us provide emergency food to community self-help groups in Kenya so they can continue to work on their water and food supply projects.
The farmers we work with have not had decent rains since early 2007, and are now finding it hard to find enough to eat.
The projects they are working on will help them avoid being in the same situation in future droughts, but they cannot do the work if they are starving.
Excellent Development works with community groups to terrace land, build sand dams and plant trees. Communities with sand dams are currently better off than those without, but their food and water supplies are nearly exhausted due to the continuing drought.
In order that the projects can continue, we are providing Food for Work for each of the 16,285 people in 65 community self-help groups.
Group members will receive daily food rations for their whole family in exchange for working a day on their community projects. Usually they do this work for free as part of their commitment to the group, but in such hard times the need to find money for food pushes many to abandon their projects in search of casual work.
We have decided to raise £160,000 to provide support for all the farmers we work with, and their families, so they can continue to work on their projects until their next harvest.
£20 will feed one person for four months
£145 will feed a family of seven people until their next harvest
£510 will feed a whole community for two weeks
By supporting people to invest in their own farms and to build communal water supplies you will enable them to build resilience to drought and become independent. We hope you will support the farmers in their work.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message. Please give what you can to help farmers in rural Kenya continue to provide for their families, now and in the future.
