We are raising funds for nine-year-old, Finlay, to have a specialist spinal operation and for pre and post operative therapy.
Finlay has been recommended for a life changing procedure by consultants at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). The procedure involves cutting nerves in the spinal column which will release the stiffness in Finlay’s legs, however the treatment and rehabilitation is not available on the NHS.
Finlay and his twin brother Daniel were born 13 weeks early but at some point during those early days Finlay suffered a bleed in his brain that left him with permanent brain damage. Finlay is unable to stand up independently or do things that other children his age take for granted.
It has recently (March 17) been discovered during a routine pre-operative screening at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children that Finlay’s hip joints have deteriorated and that he will now require a further operation on his hips prior to SDR.
The hip operation will be funded by the NHS, however following the hip surgery Finlay will require intensive rehabilitative physiotherapy to ensure the best outcome from SDR.
It is heart-wrenching to think that Finlay now has to endure two separate procedures. However, this is just a setback, and although it is disappointing, the upside is that this has been caught early so can be remedied before causing Finlay pain and discomfort.
Finlay is a very happy and determined little boy who in spite of the restrictions of his disability tries to join in games like football with his brother. Whenever Daniel plays Finlay will ask to go in goal and kneel in the middle of the goal. His dream is to be a ‘standing up boy’ like his brother.
Finlay brings a smile to the face of everyone that meets him. He loves reading and playing with his brother and their friends. He is so determined to be independent and do things for himself that to ease some of frustration he suffers will make us all very happy.
