At least 21 people with epilepsy in the UK die each week. SUDEP Action, is the only UK charity dedicated to supporting those bereaved by epilepsy, raising awareness of epilepsy risks and tackling deaths in people with epilepsy, including Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

Story

On 1st July 2022, Bart suddenly passed away peacefully in his sleep while studying abroad in California as part of his PhD studies.

Bart experienced his first seizure in March 2018, and was subsequently diagnosed with epilepsy. He experienced regular seizures over the next few years, and it was ultimately a seizure in his sleep that tragically took his life far too soon.

Studies suggest that Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) occurs in around 1 in 1000 people with epilepsy each year. This makes it an all too common occurrence, but knowledge of SUDEP is limited, even among those familiar with epilepsy itself.

SUDEP Action aims to make every epilepsy death count. They are a charity that is dedicated to raising awareness of epilepsy risks and tackling epilepsy deaths including Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

We want the passing of Bart to help raise awareness of SUDEP, and to hopefully prevent even just one case of this happening to anyone else in the future.
