In the early days of lockdown, I couldn't leave the house to shop because my partner had to shield and neither could I get a supermarket slot, or a veg box slot - all I could order online was wine and chocolate! I spent hours trying to figure out what I could cook from the freezer and store cupboard, and how to make it last. I felt anxious, ashamed and inadequate, and had to rely on the charity of friends to shop for me. Looking back, I had a tiny taste of what it must be like living with food insecurity. It was horrible.Once upon a time I thought that food banks only existed in areas of social deprivation, urban ghettos, the impoverished wastelands of the North. What ignorance. There's a food bank in your leafy suburb, in your rural idyll, in your cool urban enclave. Millions of people went hungry or used food banks in the first weeks of the pandemic. Food insecurity is going to rise this autumn along with unemployment. Imagine if you couldn't afford food to feed yourself and your children. This September I am going to walk 100 miles for the Trussell Trust. At the risk of sounding like an advert on Classic FM - please help.
