Fran's Virtual London Marathon for #BCH

Virtual London Marathon 2021 · 3 October 2021 ·
Edmund is my lovely, adventurous, inquisitive, cheeky and incredibly brave 10 year old nephew, and for almost all of his life he has been an outpatient at Birmingham Children's Hospital. Edmund has anterior segment dysgenisis which is a disorder affecting the front of the eye and he has been under the care of the eye department at BCH since he was 6 months old. The amazing team have been constantly tested by Edmund's condition and have had to "rewrite the book" at almost every stage of his treatment - he likes to keep them on their toes! To date, Edmund has had 24 general anaesthetic procedures to reduce the excessive pressure which builds up in his eyes, a lens replacement, and last year he had a corneal transplant which despite early success, sadly was rejected. BCH has been so supportive throughout and continue to do all they can to take care of Edmund.
Last year I started running and ran my first half marathon in September. In a moment of madness after running my second half marathon, I entered the London Marathon ballot but sadly didn't get a place. Undeterred, I have signed up for the Virtual London Marathon on 3rd October and decided to run for BCH to thank them for taking such wonderful care of Edmund. I am also running to show Edmund how incredibly proud I am of him - I know that his bravery will spur me on during all those long runs and hopefully he will be able to come to cheer me along on race day.
