Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As most of you know (because I haven't shut up about it), I am running the London Marathon at the end of April and wanted to use my place to raise some money for the wonderful charity St Mungo's.
Over the past few years, I have been shocked at the number of homeless people on the streets, and sadly the number is only increasing. On any given night, there is an average of 4751 people sleeping rough. This figure has increased 169% since 2010 and has risen for the seventh consecutive year. 73% of homeless people report a physical health problem and 80% a mental health problem. Finally, the average age of men who die while homeless is 47 and for women just 43.
These facts help to shed some light on this heartbreaking crisis. A crisis that is only getting bigger, and that in my opinion, not enough is being done to address. That's why I wanted to do my bit to help raise some money for a fantastic charity who are desperately trying to combat this problem.
Cue St Mungo's. St Mungo's are a charity who are trying to tackle homelessness through a number of diverse and innovative schemes. Examples of these schemes include: 17 outreach teams going out across London and the south of England each night to support more than 2800 people off the streets and into accommodation; providing healthcare and treatment for people experiencing physical and mental health problems and supporting people experiencing homelessness with training and employment services to help get them back on their feet. Moreover, with 11% of their staff having first-hand experience of living on the streets, the charity have a real practical insight into the crisis.
Where does your money go? St Mungo's are committed to making sure as much money goes on services as possible. For every £1 donated, 90p is spent on projects that support people experiencing homelessness, 4p is spent on raising the next £1 and the remaining 6p is spent on administration.
So please help me raise some money for a wonderful charity, who are fighting a worthy cause. Any donation, big or small, will go a long way in helping to tackle this huge problem. Thank you.
