Volunteering in Japan · 3 September 2015

ICYE-UK sends volunteers to live and work in communities worldwide where they learn new skills and make a real difference to peoples' lives. It aims to promote peace and cultural understanding through the exchange of people and skills.

Story

My name is Frances Taylor-Smith, I am 20 years old.

In September 2016 I am going to Japan for a whole year as a volunteer with Inter-Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) Charity No. 1081907. I will be working on a small community led project run entirely by volunteers. At the present time I don't know for certain which project I will be placed on but the company always tries to place you on one of your top choices.

However, the charity cannot afford to send volunteers abroad all by itself and so the volunteers must fundraise for their places. The fee that I must raise will cover my accommodation, flights, visa, food and travel costs for the 12 months I am in Japan. Essentially I have until August 2016 to raise £4745 of which I have already raised £3710 so far, this is a huge task that I am hoping you can assist me with.

Over the past few years my greatest wish has been to do project/charity work abroad, this was fueled by a deep desire to see the world and experience other cultures; especially the cultures of Asian countries, predominantly Japan. I find their language and festivals fascinating, particularly the Aomori Nebuta, Shichi-Go-San, Seijin Shiki, Cherry blossom and Bon festivals.

I was also inspired to do a charity gap year as I have family members who have previously gone abroad, my cousin went to South America where he taught English in Brazil for his year though unfortunately he fell ill and had to return early, my aunt did Voluntary Service Overseas in New Guinea where she looked after the school library, helped with the mothers club, taught basic first aid, sports and art in the school. I found this to be interesting as I thought that it was such an insightful way to see and learn about the world and are not just visiting and seeing the tourist hot spots before going back home and forgetting all about your trip; you're getting involved in the community, getting to meet the people who live there and helping them to develop and in turn the experience will help to improve my outlook and the whole visit will be something that I'll never forget.

I believe that I would be able to gain a higher sense of independence and develop an even more mature outlook on the world by doing a year with ICYE.
