Francesca's 31 & On The shelf

31 & On The shelf · 26 March 2019
My friends young daughter Kyra is in need of limb saving surgery which is unfortunately not available on the NHS. She has Proximal Focal Femoral Deficiency which means she has a short left thigh and deformed hip and ankle. The only option the NHS currently offers is amputation so that a prosthetic will fit better, however there are other surgeries available abroad, which mean after a series of operations, hopefully by the time Kyra is around 16 she should be able to walk normally.
To help raise funds for her next operation, I will be attempting to climb 31 routes on Shelf Road, CO within 24 hours.
Weather allowing*, on the 26th March 2019 (my 31st Birthday) I’m hoping to get an early start in and lead climb 31 sport routes within the given timescale. The grade is not important, as long as I finish the route. As a idea; the most routes I’ve climbed in a day so far in my climbing career has been 17, so this is going to be a tough challenge, but hopefully a doable one.
Shelf road consists of sharp limestone and the crux of the day is going to be pushing on through the pain of worn, torn and shredded fingertips! If you ain’t bleeding, you ain’t trying ;)
After having limb surgery abroad almost 5 years ago after a rock climbing accident myself, I can personally say, the quality and care I received was remarkable, but very costly. Not only did they put together a near severed foot, but I was able to walk, work and climb again within three months. I hope for Kyra to be able to have as much success with her surgery abroad. It also concurs that Kyra will be heading to the United States for her second operation in April 2019.
