Francesca Lamont is raising money for Samson Centre for MS
Story
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. MS is the most common neurological condition in young adults.
In most cases symptoms worsen over time and people find they need more and more support. MS can cause problems with speech, vision, walking, balance, memory and hand function. MS symptoms are different for everyone as it depends on which parts of the brain and spinal cord are affected by the disease.
The Samson Centre was originally set up by a small group of people with MS meeting in a village hall and has evolved into a wonderful place for people with MS to exercise in groups and in the gym (independently and with an instructor), socialise and have access to neurological physiotherapy to help manage and monitor their disease. There are also oxygen chambers, as oxygen therapy can help relieve symptoms.
It costs £300,000 to run the Samson centre for a year and they don’t receive funding from the government or the NHS.
Francesca visited the Samson Centre with a patient whose MS symptoms were worsening and were severely impacting her ability to sleep. After her visit, Francesca was inspired to raise money for the centre.
Monika is an occupational therapist with two young children and has been referring patients to Samson Centre where they have greatly benefited from specialist support and facilities available for them.
Francesca has 4 children and is currently retraining to return to work as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist, after time out looking after her children.
100 miles in 4 days along the Jurassic coast is going to be a big challenge for us. We are mostly training at night time, as daytimes are too busy. We are enjoying the peace of walking in the dark, sometimes accompanied by Willow, Francesca’s golden retriever.
