When I started working as a field instructor at SUWS of the Carolinas in 2014, I was struggling.  It didn't take me very long to realize that I wasn't much better off than my students, 11-18 year old kids who come to the mountains to try to learn more about themselves, grow as human beings, and heal from the hard times in their lives.  By the time I left the company in late 2016, working the program alongside my students had radically altered my outlook, giving me hope for the first time in my adult life.

This past March I returned to field work at SUWS, older and wiser, but still grounded in the knowledge that there's more for me to learn from time spent in the woods with good kids who are trying to be better.  Unfortunately, specialized intensive inpatient programs like SUWS are quite expensive, and even very affluent families have a hard time affording them for their children - and the truth is that every child and adult alive would benefit from the social-emotional learning, earned self confidence, and personal reflection that we learn in wilderness.  

With that reality in mind, I'm taking the next few months to reflect on my time at SUWS, what I've learned, and how it's changed my life and the lives of my students.  I'll be sharing that reflection with you via my social media platforms - with words and photos from both my time in the woods and from my travels and adventures outside of SUWS.  All I ask is that you take a few minutes to make a small donation to the Sky's the Limit Fund - so that students whose families don't have the means can get the therapeutic intervention they need to find a better life for themselves.
