Sean is one of our close colleague and friend
In September 2008 Caitlyn (Sean’s second child) was transferred from our local hospital to the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester for emergency surgery on a heart defect.
A routine visit to the health visitor and subsequent GP visit, had identified a potentially fatal and very rare defect affectionately known as an ALCAPA (Anomalous left coronary artery from pulmonary artery) which had resulted in a heart attack that morning. On 19 September Caitlyn underwent open heart surgery to repair the ALCAPA at the Glenfield, she spent 7 days in the PICU and a further 6 days on the ward but after just 13 days Caitlyn was allowed to come home.
Sean and his family were told that despite the repairs to Caitlyn’s arteries having fully healed and they would cause her no further issues, the heart attacks she suffered caused irrepairable damage to both her heart tissue and her mitral valve which guarantees the need for further operations in the future.
We are running the London marathon to raise money so that further research can done on conditions like the one of Caitlyn and so that more help can be given to families like Sean’s family.
