Story
Stammering is when someone repeats, prolongs or gets stuck when trying to say sounds or words. There might also be signs of visible tension as the person works hard to get the word out. But it is different from the occasional repetition that everybody experiences.
We don't know exactly what causes stammering, but research is showing that it is neurological. This means that the way speech is produced in the brain is different for people who stammer. Stammering is the way some people talk. That's all.
Gabriel has very bravely chosen to not only highlight to people that he has a stammer, but to run the Manchester Mini Great North Run for Stamma UK.
Stamma UK not only provide support for the person who stammers, but for their family and others - schools, workplaces and so on. Beyond that Stamma UK are currently working tirelessly to raise awareness and work towards inclusivity. Take a moment to think about how many people you see on TV or hear on the radio with a stammer? Maybe one at most. It's 2023 and stammering is still a taboo and something that many people don't understand.
We are very proud of Gabriel for being so brave. As he has got older he has become more self conscious of his stammer and Gabriel's confidence has been affected. So for Gabriel to want to stand tall and proud and say this is me and I stammer is amazing. We hope you think so too.
