Trek Kilimanjaro Velindre Cancer Centre · 20 January 2011
Hi everyone
.
My dad died over two years ago and his retirement was a long slow deterioration to cancer. He died aged 77 years 39 of which he worked in the physics department of Velindre hospital. He was involved in the establishment of the radiotherapy clinic on its transfer from CRI in 1956.
I was devastated when he died but I know that, being the pratical man that he was, he would have been overjoyed to think I am doing something practical to help others carry on what was basically his life's work.
Velindre hospital is like no other. In South Wales, I don't thinkthere is anybody untouched by the work that they do, whether it's family, friend, neighbour or colleague. The dedication and professionalism of the staff is well known. For them, and for my dad, I will do my best to reach the roof top of Africa; Mount Kilimanjaro
I'm a 51 year old firefighter based at Whitchurch fire station in North Cardiff, South Wales, UK .I joined the fire service in 1987. Initially serving in Barry, I transferred to Whitchurch in 1989. I'm married to Alison, a special needs health visitor and have three children:
Catherine, who is reading geology at Southampton University. (I've been told to bring back a few rocks.)
George, studying for A level at Whitchurch High School
Fergus, studying for GCSE also at Whitchurch High.
During the following few months I will be doing some training walks and hopefully some extra fund raising activities with the backing of colleagues and the fire service.
My hobbies include Hillwalking and making wine. I also currently volunteer in the Air Ambulance charity shop in Whitchurch Village
