North Devon Marathon · 26 June 2016

Reach Inclusive Arts (Reach) has been in existence since 1983 and supports learning disabled people and those who have used mental health services. Our aim is to create opportunities for people to experience art as a therapeutic medium and create exciting work which conveys something about their lives. Activities are designed to address isolation and discrimination and promote inclusion through engagement with the local community. The charity aims to leave a lasting sense of value and acceptance for disadvantaged people through exhibition and performance. Reach Inclusive Arts employ professional artists and believe that high quality arts facilitate personal and professional development and can be used to explore ideas, articulate feelings and foster social inclusion. Therapeutic benefit is derived through nurturing artistic potential in shared experiences which develop advocacy and social skills. The work delivers strong and specific social outcomes and our evaluations demonstrate that users benefit from community arts to live more healthy and independent lives.

Story

Some of you may be aware that at the end June, 26th to be exact I will be competing in my first ever marathon.  London wasn't available so in a moment of madness I signed up for an off road marathon starting and finishing in Woolacombe (North Devon Marathon). After some proper investigation, something I really should have done before committing I found that it's rated as the 6th hardest marathon in the UK, in main due to it's 1,000 metres of ascent. Winning time in the past few years has been around the 3hrs 30min mark so no records from me, 5 hours if I'm lucky.

Wish me luck!!
