Woodsmoke Group Camp provides an outdoor experience for young people from the wider Sunderland area. It is run by a group of motivated volunteers whose sole aim is to ensure that participants learn about themselves, and take away positive memories they can build upon as they move into adult life.

Story

On Friday 28th May 2021, a small group of us will set off to cycle 136 miles across England, from Coast To Coast, once again raising funds for Woodsmoke Camp.

Woodsmoke Camp (formerly St. Gabriel’s) provides a unique outdoor summer camping experience, for youngsters from Sunderland and the surrounding area. It started in 1912 and is still going strong over 100 years later with the help of a group of dedicated volunteers. All sponsorship will go directly to help fund the various outdoor activities for the kids - canoeing, rock climbing, and mountain biking to name but a few.

Personally speaking, Woodsmoke is a place me and my kid brother Richie went for 2 weeks of the summer every year, for as long as I can remember. My Dad went when he was a kid. My Grandpa went when he was a kid back in 1937. Some of my favourite memories of times with Richie exist because of this place.

Reflecting for a moment, it’s safe to say my first C2C experience in 2019 was the hardest thing I’ve ever put myself through; physically, mentally, and emotionally. Looking back now, it was like a weird type of therapy that I didn’t even realise I was probably benefiting from at the time. Me, Richie’s mountain bike, and 136 miles.

Which brings me to 2021.
Two years older... and two years wiser.
Meaning two slick tyres from the start this time (sorry kiddo, it was torture with those thick-beaded off-road treads last time around!)
The crew remains the same as in 2019...
- Cyclists: Myself, Albi, Gordon, Jay and Paul.
- Sherpas: Dave and my Dad.

Wish us luck!
Much love, Gary x
