Story
5 years ago on 16th April, Donna gave birth to our beautiful sleeping baby boy Blake after hearing 3 day earlier that his heart had stopped. Our dreams had been snatched away from us and it's the worst experience of our lives.
It wasn't a scenario we had ever contemplated, but the harsh reality was that in those few days our lives would be changed forever. Not knowing it at the time, but SANDS helped us in the days following Blake's birth and are still helping us now
They had commissioned the snowdrop room on the Labour ward at Queens hospital where we could spend some time undisturbed with him in a cold cot, in an environment that didn't resemble a hospital side room. It gave us a short time to hold him, be with him and say our goodbyes without a pressure of being rushed out immediately. What shocked us the most was a small book with so many previous occupants of that room writing their goodbyes to their little angels and saying thank you to SANDS and its volunteers for giving us that time
SANDS are still in our lives and Donna now regularly goes to support groups to have a chance to talk about Blake and help other families in the same situation we faced ourselves 5 years ago
Now 5 years on I'd like to do my bit to give back to them and will be doing a sponsored skydive later this year in Blake's honour. It isn't something I've done before and probably won't do again. Just the thought of being that high and jumping is exciting and frightening, but will hopefully worth it. If any of you can spare a little money to help SANDS help others, it will make all the difference to another family who might unfortunately need their support in the future
