Edinburgh Marathon 2023 · 28 May 2023 ·

PoTS UK was founded by a group of healthcare professionals with PoTS who recognised the need to increase awareness of this condition. We are passionate about educating and supporting patients, family, friends and medical professionals about this widely unrecognised and misdiagnosed condition. We do this by sharing up to date evidence and resources. We also work with healthcare professionals and other charities in the UK and abroad, and advocate for our members by seeking better NHS services, more research, and targeted treatments for people with PoTS.

Story

I am running the Edinburgh Marathon on the 28th of May 2023 to raise awareness for Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) and Dysautonomia. And to raise funding for http://www.potsuk.org/

PoTS/Dysautonomia is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system, causing disabling symptoms. Lucy’s body can’t regulate her heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature or digestive system as it should. This causes Lucy to faint and collapse, she deals with extreme fluctuating fatigue, brain fog and digestive problems and she must plan and pace every single activity every single day. Her life and that of my family is greatly affected. Lucy has had many terrible injuries due to fainting and collapsing, she uses a wheelchair to reduce the risk of injury and to help manage her fatigue levels.

Lucy had to endure years of symptoms, without diagnosis or medical understanding. There is a clear lack of medical awareness of the condition and only a few specialist doctors in the whole of the UK.  The lack of medical awareness of PoTS has resulted in a delay in accessing support, resources and medication to improve her everyday life. PoTS UK are trying to change this.

Currently, there is no cure, too few specialists and management options are limited. The more funding PoTS UK receive, the more funds that can be focused towards supporting patients and research into the condition, it’s causes, treatment and possible cures.
