Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As some of you know my 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 3. This is a chronic, life-threatening and lifelong condition which can have its ups and downs on a daily basis.
Last year I ran the 10k to help raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and again I would like to thank all of you who donated, I managed to run the race in 49 minutes.
JDRF funds research into the cure, treatment and prevention of type 1 diabetes. It's their aim to help develop new treatments to keep people with type 1 as healthy as possible until they find a cure.
This year I am going to run the half marathon and I'm delighted & proud to say that Kami is also going to run the Junior Great Scottish Run (3km). Although this will be extremely challenging for us as parents. As running uses up a lot of energy Kami will be more at risk of suffering from a hypoglycaemic attack which could result in her becoming unconscious. We will need to ensure she has the correct amount of carboydrate and sugar before the start of the run.
Adults are not allowed to participate in this race, therefore we will have to put our trust in Kami to look out for the various symptoms of a hypo so that she can treat this herself during the run, which will be a massive step for both us and Kami. Earlier this year Kami began injecting herself with insulin at least 4 times per day, and although she hates doing this, she understands that she must in order to stay alive.
As parents we want Kami to lead as much of a normal life as she can, to do this we have to educate & trust Kami to look after her diabetes so that she can do all the things that she wants to do with her friends. Being able to treat herself during a hypo will be another massive step for Kami.
I strongly believe that finding the cure for type 1 diabetes is only a matter of time and money. The more money we can raise for JDRF, the more research they can fund and the faster they will find the cure, which would make my little girl so very happy. Until they find a cure we also want the treatment of type 1 to be easier, especially for the 29,000 children living with this chronic condition.
I would also like to bring to your attention that the diagnosis of type 1 in children under the age of 5 has increased five fold in recent years, without any explanation why.
Please help to support this worthwhile charity by making a donation.
Many thanks in advance from Gary, Tracy & Kami.
