The Church of England in Birmingham is committed to reaching out to every person of every generation with the love of Christ. The old gas works, a wonderful shell of a building on Gas Street right in the heart of Birmingham, has been bought as the venue for a new church targeted at students and young adults.
The Revd Tim Hughes has been appointed Priest-in-Charge of St Luke’s Parish. He and his wife Rachel bring a wealth of leadership experience from their 10 years at Holy Trinity Brompton where Tim was Director of Worship, heading up Worship Central, an international worship training and resource centre. Tim and Rachel have a special responsibility for building up the new church.
The church is targeted to reach Birmingham’s un-churched and de-churched, and play its part in the re-evangelism of Birmingham and the transformation of its society. Gas Street will be a Resourcing Church:
- sending out teams to partner with other churches who ask for help to bring new life and energy to a parish in new expressions of prayer, worship, mission and ministry;
- delivering high quality training events on all sorts of topics (worship will be a key one) which will be open to people all over the region;
- encouraging its members to bless their neighbourhoods in practical ways wherever they live.
All building development costs are to be met by funds raised. The current phases in development will cost a total of £2.3m. Phase 1, costing nearly £1m, is complete and the building is open. Now we need to double the capacity and fit out the building.
