Great North Run · 30 August 2008

Women are still getting breast cancer and dying from it. That’s why Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer have joined forces to become the UK’s largest dedicated breast cancer research charity. And with your help, together we can put an end to breast cancer, once and for all.

Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

As many of you may know the Charity for Breast Cancer is very close to my heart at the moment with my very good and long time friend Susan May busy fighting ( and beating fingers crossed ) the disease.

Myself and Susan have known each other since we were born and were brought up just about as Brother and Sister with her living next door to me. To find out that someone so close to you has be hit by this disease made me determined to do something............. So here I am.

The Great North Run takes place on 5th October and im hoping to raise as much as possible.  The training is going well although my legs still keep telling me at times that this is hard work !!!!

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Breast Cancer Campaign gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now!

On LIne Diary of exercise

Sat 30th August ......... Tennis 2 hrs. A good workout but the hard surface is playing havoc with my back !!

Sunday 31st August......... 9 mile Run.................. God that hurt !! Took about 1hr 40 so Im not going to be breaking any world records !!! Ran in my Breast Cancervest and one little lad asked his Mam why I was wearing a pink dress !!!! oh deer !!!

Monday 1st September....... Tennis  1 1/2 hours. Not the best workout after trying to find a court free !!!! Wimbledon finished ages ago. Back is playing up a little but hopefully nothing too serious. Starting to enjoy it though after not playing for about 20 years.

Tuesday 2nd September....... Day off from exercise. Instead stood freezing cold watching son play cricket !!!

Wednesday 3rd September...... 6 mile run from work at 4.15 and then 1 hr of Badminton from 7 until 8........... Run went well although yet again i got soaked going over the Tyne Bridge !!!. Badminton was also good with 5 of us this week playing singles on 2 courts. All in all a good day for exercise.

Thursday 4th September........ Oh deer this is a bad day for exercise and my weight !!!. Its Mams birthday night out so we are meeting at the pub at 7 and then having a curry at 9 !!! extra work required over the weekend.

Friday 5th September......... Short run tonight before kids go and stay at Mams.

Saturday 6th September.......... Rest day now that the lovely British weather has put paid to my Cricket yet again. Going out for a meal tonight with friends so must try and stay off the alcohol.

Sunday 7th September................ 10 mile Run. Well we managed 11 1/4 and I did not feel too bad at all. Got soaked at times but had a good run and felt reasonably ok at the end of it. Took us about 1 hr 50 so looking like a 2.20 ish time in the GNR which is not too bad for a man of 29 !!!!!.

Monday 8th September............. Not sure yet but wont do a great deal !!!. Rest day today as Mrs is going to Aerobics.

Tuesday 9th September............  Ran home from work approx 6 miles. Not the most scenic run but suppose it gets the miles into the legs. Went across the Tyne bridge as normal and then through Shieldfield etc. Took me about 1 hr and felt good at the end.

Wednesday 10th September........ Badminton 7 til 8. Got a good workout and surely with the heat in the sports centre i will have lost a couple of pounds !!!!!

Thursday 11th September............ 6 1/2 mile run on what turned out to be a lovely warm evening. Finished it feeling very good considering Badminton yesterday.  Maybe my last run for a few days as My Mrs is off to London for the weekend and I have got the kids.

Friday  12th September............... Rest day as ive got the kids. Promise to try and not have beer on the night !!!!!!. Oh well a couple of cans but thats not too bad !!!!

Saturday 13th September........... Cricket is off so no exercise today apart from house work !!!! god this hoovering thing is hard LOL Got a School reunion tonight so may have the odd sherbert LOL

Sunday 14th September............... No exercise as such but worked at the Speedway from 3pm until 10.30pm. God Im knackered.

Monday 15th September................ Run after work. Probably about 6 to 8 miles. This will have to be a good one as it will be my last run this week as the Hospital beckons tomorrow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday 16 - Sunday 21st............ No running allowed as been in hospital getting my lower back sorted out. Writing this on Thursday and it feels like it has been a success as although still in a bit of pain Im hoping I can get back out for a short run on Sunday morning. Then its full steam ahead for the last 2 weeks before the run on the 5th October. Dont want to do much in the last week so will push it hard next week and see how many miles I can get into my legs before then.

Sunday 21st September...... Well back feeling great and managed 8 miles with very little pain from my back.  Good run but at a easier pace. Now I need to step it up this week and hopefully get a 11 mile + run in next weekend.

Monday 22nd September....... Day off from training.

Tuesday 23rd September...... 4 mile short run but ran it as hard as possible. Must admit I didnt feel to good running this one. Not sure if my Son Glenn has passed on a bit of his cold which at this stage I certainly could do without.

Wednesday 34th September........... Badminton  7 til 8.

Thursday 25th September.................  Working late and then Susan out at Fat Club so no traingin today. Starting to wind down a little with the run only 10 days away. Going to do 8 miles on Saturday and then next week will be spent doing a couple of little runs but thats about it.

Friday 26th September................... Rest day.

Saturday 27th September................. 7.15 am. We must be stupid but we leave home at this mad time of the morning for a 8 mile run through Gosforth Park etc. Run goes very well although after giving blood last night I did feel a little tired. Not sure if this cold is going to come to anything.

Sunday 28th September............... Rest Day

Monday 29th September................... 6.7 miles in 1 hour 5 so looking like a 2hr 20 ish run which will break no records !!!!!!. Run went well although Gary ( running partner ) is going through a bit of a bad time at the moment after weeks of running great. Hopefully now the rest until Sunday will help him recover and he will enjoy the day as much as I have in the past.

So apart from badminton on Wednesday night thats my training done and dusted and its now a case of relaxing as much as possible between now and Sunday and eating as much Pasta and Rice as possible for my carbs !!!!.

Would just like to say a big THANK YOU to all those who have supported me over these last few weeks especially Susan my wife who has not seen a great deal of me over these last few weeks !!!!!!

Sat Night............... well the car is dropped off at the finish and Ive just been driven back following the course route !!!!! 13.1 miles is not that far............... well not in the passenger seat anyway xx

Sunday...... 19.00... Well thats that all done and dusted. Run went ok although to be honest I didnt feel 100% as the week fighting to keep away from the wifes cold i think took its toll a little.

THANK YOU to everyone who sponsored me................. roll on next year

xxx
