Story

Hello,

About the swim

In 1998 after completing 1000 miles of swimming in swimming pools my "Round Britain Swim" was initiated. On the suggestion of my husband, Richard, the challenge was set to swim the distance equal to the distance around the coastline of England, Wales and Scotland. To mark my position on the map we are converting my "swimming miles" to the "walking miles" of John Merill who walked around the said coastline in 1978, where he logged 6824 miles. My position is plotted on the map annually, from the starting position of St. Bees in Cumbria.

Fund-raising
At the completion of each 900 miles I do a sponsored event for the next 100 miles to bring the total to 1000 miles. To date 5 sponsored events of my respective last "100 miles" have taken place with all proceeds going to "Hospice at Home West Cumbria". Funds raised are now in excess of £42,000.

Calculations 6824 miles

1 mile = 1610 metres
6824 miles = 10,986,640 metres
1 length = 25 metres (of a 25m pool)
10,986,640 metres = 439,466 lengths
