Why I am running the London Marathon.
5years ago, my Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer and our lives were in turmoil. At the point of diagnosis he was 54 years old.
My dad has always been relatively fit for his age, he’s a manual worker and visits the gym frequently. As the cancer was already at stage 4, my dad was advised at the outset an operation to remove his prostate would be the best option. Obviously any operation comes with risks, but of course coupled with a cancer diagnosis, it was increasingly traumatic, physically and mentally for everyone, no less my dad. Over a period of months, watching the man you often think as invincible was starting to show this evil disease was taking its toll on him.
Thankfully the operation was a success but the recovery period was long and slow. Check up after check up my dad kept positive. He has a number of dormant cancer cell’s remaining in the prostate area. But several months on, I had my dad back - however, this was to be somewhat sort lived.
This year, he had some further tests, when he got the news none of us wanted - those dormant cancer cells are no longer dormant - it has come back! The journey starts all over again, my dad is strong, and has fought this disease once and will do it again! He’s not on his own, as a family we will beat this.
Prostate cancer can affect males young or old, fit or not so fit. Consequently, I’ve decided to attempt to run The London Marathon to raise much need funds to increase the levels of research required to fight an invasive disease which causes so much despair, agony and torment.
