Sahara Desert Treck · 24 October 2020

Linwood School is a special school; an outward facing, school of excellence, judged as ‘outstanding’ in our last five inspections. Linwood School currently has five campuses supporting 320 children and young people. We welcome children and young people from a wide geographical area and support a comprehensive range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. We welcome diversity in culture, religion and ability and we value the contribution that every child and young person makes. We offer a safe and supportive environment, as well as a personalised, relevant, innovative and motivating curriculums to meet a range of individual learning needs. All learning is outcome led promoting achievement, resilience, well-being, aspiration and meaningful future destinations. Linwood School has many facilities one of which is our swimming pool where we provide lessons so that pupils gain water confidence and develop stroke techniques. Some of our students also use the facility for personalised hydrotherapy sessions. The pool also supports community swimming sessions. The pool is now in urgent need of repair and refurbishment so we will be participating in sponsored Sahara Desert and Great Wall of China Treks to raise funds for the much needed work. We appreciate this is a difficult time for individuals and companies alike, but if you are able to make a donation, however small, then this would be greatly appreciated.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In October 2020 I will be trekking 100km through the Sahara over the course of 5 days, camping out in the desert to raise money for Linwood school to repair, maintain and redesign its swimming pool.

If you don't already know, I used to be a teacher and am passionate that all children deserve the best possible start in life and in their education. This is even more applicable when those children have special educational needs and disabilities. Linwood is a school local to me in Bournemouth that works to support these children and having facilities like a pool gives the children the opportunity to feel relaxed and improve their confidence. Many of the children who use the pool have physical disabilities, which can limit their movement and being in an environment where they feel weightless can help to alleviate pressure and pain that they feel as well as providing them with both physical and mental stimulation.

Please see the Linwood Charitable Trust webpage for further information: https://linwood.bournemouth.sch.uk/linwood/charity/charitable-trust/

My very lovely sister-in-law, who works as a teacher at the school, and my equally lovely brother told me about this opportunity to help as they're also going to be completing the trek with a number of other dedicated school staff members and I don't know why, but at the time thought it was a great idea to join in!

So please, if you can spare anything at all, I'd be forever grateful and in return, feel free to enjoy my growing dread and anxiety and eventual sweaty suffering during the trek!
