Story

When baby Edward was born at 26 weeks and 3 days gestation, he was taken immediately to the neonatal unit. 18 hours later, Jordan and I were finally able to see him for the first time. Our tiny baby boy weighing 1lb 9oz looked so tiny and helpless in his incubator and we were powerless to help him while he needed so much medical care.

Teddy needed a lot of help with breathing when he was born, he had several stints on and off a ventilator, a cpap machine, high flow and low flow oxygen to finally breathing on his own. He had a bleed on the brain, a bowel condition called necrotising enterocolitis, stage 3 ROP, a blood infection, sepsis, 5 blood transfusions, and was fed through a tube for 84 days. The incredible team on the unit worked so hard to give Teddy the best medical care and in supporting Jordan and I in caring for our son the best we could, including supporting me in expressing breast milk to be able to feed Teddy.

After 94 days, (3 and a half months) we were finally discharged, our lives changed and forever grateful to the amazing staff on the neonatal unit, as well as the fantastic team who delivered Teddy by emergency c section and saved both mine and his life.

While the care Teddy received was faultless, the unit (one of only three in the northwest that has an intensive care unit) is incredibly small and parents are squashed into small spaces next to their baby's incubator, with other people a little too close while they are going through such a traumatic time. Arrowe Park deserves a brand new neonatal unit so that other parents in the future have more comfort and privacy while their child is desperately sick.

While Teddy is now a cheeky, happy, healthy baby boy, this isn't always the case, many babies continue needing additional support once they are discharged and unfortunately some babies do lose their battles. Jordan and I are doing this abseil in honour of all the babies that we knew on the unit, and we send all our love to their parents.

Last year almost 400 babies were born needing extra help in the first few days and weeks of their lives from the Neonatal Unit at Wirral Women and Children's Hospital, Arrowe Park. We're raising £1.5 million to extensively refurbish the Neonatal Unit. By providing an extensive refurbishment to the Neonatal Unit including world class medical equipment and enhanced parent facilities we hope to make a difficult time a little bit more comfortable.
