Three years ago when I applied for a job at Diabetes UK I'd heard of diabetes, I'd seen it in the news and briefly read about it in the papers. But I'll admit I had no real understanding about what it actually is; that it's a complex and serious condition, that we don't really know what causes Type 1 diabetes and there's no cure yet, that there's more to Type 2 that just our waistlines; that every 2 minutes that tick by someone in the UK is diagnosed and there's a million more who don't even know they have it. I'd never heard of hypos and hypers, complications and burnout. 

From working with our incredible volunteers over the past 3 years, I've learned so more about diabetes, not only what it is but also the affect and impact it can have on people's lives; that it can stop people in their tracks, be a source of worry, anxiety, guilt and shame. That it affects both body and mind. 

And that's where Diabetes UK comes in. Whether it's funding researchers who are looking for answers, helping volunteers run support groups in their local communities, influencing better services, providing information or campaigning to increase the public's knowledge, Diabetes UK supports everyone with every aspect of their diabetes, so everyone will have the confidence they need to manage their diabetes well and live their lives exactly how they want, by achieving every aim and reaching every goal. 

I don't have diabetes myself, I have family and friends who do and I've seen the impact it has on them. Everyday I'm surrounded by dedicated, committed and inspirational people who make up the most incredible team. I'd love to raise £575 that will help Diabetes UK to keep going, until we reach the point where there are no lost limbs, no night time hypos, no comas, no lives cut short, when we have a world where diabetes is finally doing no harm. 

I'm now utterly petrified! I have no idea what on earth made my sign up for a tandem sky dive, it was a true moment of madness, I don't even like heights that much!!! I just know I wanted to do something a bit daring, a bit 'out of my ordinary' to help the 7 million people currently living with diabetes. And I love to think it might just be one of my pounds that funds that cure!!!
