Story
An anonymous stranger saved my brother’s life.
In just 10 minutes, you might be able to save someone’s too.
On Sunday 23rd April 2023, I’ll be running the London Marathon in aid of Anthony Nolan, a charity dedicated to providing stem cell transplants to people suffering from blood cancer and blood disorders.
On 21st April 2018, my brother Rob was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. The story that follows is nothing short of extraordinary - a gruelling year of isolated intensive care, chemotherapy and a bone marrow stem cell transplant that took an emotional and physical toll. But, in true Rob Breare style and a seemingly endless supply of grit, tenacity and determination, nearly 5 years later to the day he’ll be lining up alongside me to run 26.2 miles around London.
Without that transplant, this story would already have had its ending. What’s more, he’ll be supported by his three children, Theo, Milo and Isabella who were just 10, 8 and 2 when the news first broke. It is a comeback story worthy of Hollywood and I’m hugely proud to be running alongside him.
But that’s where you come in.
Anthony Nolan’s transplants rely on ordinary people, aged between 16-30, putting themselves on the donor register to be a lifesaver. It takes no more than 10 mins, and can be done here: https://www.anthonynolan.org/help-save-a-life/join-stem-cell-register
In fact, I’m pledging that if 30 of my supporters can show proof that they’ve signed-up to the register, or that they’re already on it, I’ll run the race with my hair dyed Anthony Nolan green and with A & N shaved into my head.
I’m trying to raise £7,500 in vital funds to support the growth of the stem cell register, to fund groundbreaking research, and to help Anthony Nolan continue to provide the best post-transplant care.
You never know when cancer might touch your family. When it touched mine, the generosity of a random stranger kept us together.
I’ll do everything in my power to make sure there are as many of those strangers out there as possible.
In just 10 mins, you could join them.
