Help us raise £35,000 at this years Abseil so we can continue providing our services to people with terminal illnesses, and their families...

Story

I'm taking on The Myton Hospices Coventry Cathedral Abseil to help them raise £35,000!

I have decided to do this abseil for Myton Hospice again because the last few years has been a hell of a journey, without the ongoing support from Myton with caring for extremely poorly family members and offering us all counselling I doubt our family would have been able to cope. Their amazing care has been with us for many years and I really feel it's time to give back once again.

As many of my friends and family know recently, we have found out that there is a cancer gene which runs in our family. I have been diagnosed with this gene BRCA 1 (ask me about it!) and produced a kind of bucket list of things to do before my preventative surgery. I know I will have to have a prophylactic double mastectomy and eventually an oophorectomy. I feel I need to make the most of my knowledge and spread awareness as much as possible about getting to know your body, I also want to give back to charities that have helped and supported me through a very difficult time.

With this gene, I know at least two of my second cousins have had to fight breast cancer, with a strong prevalence of the gene throughout that side of the family it is more than likely that Myton will support us many more times in my lifetime.

Unfortunately, my mum lost her battle to Breast Cancer last May. In the last few weeks of her life, she spent in Myton hospice, a wonderful place. She was well and truly looked after in her final days. As well as this my Grandad Geoff lost his battle to cancer (unrelated to our BRCA gene) in September 2018. He also spent his final weeks in the hospice, and they supported us beyond belief during that time. Myton Hospice gave them the highest standard of care I’ve ever seen.

Whilst I am asking for donations to this worthy charity, I also understand that there are a lot of people struggling financially. Any donation you can make is a
contribution to improving the lives of families. I thank you for your continued support over the last few years.

A note from Myton: The Coronavirus pandemic continues to have a significant impact on their ability to raise vital funds. This year alone they expect to see a significant drop in voluntary income of at least £2 million. They have made significant cost savings to protect patient and family services and to safeguard for the future but they need the support of me and you more than ever before. Playing their part in the response to Covid-19 whilst providing dedicated care and support for terminally ill patients, and their families, in their inpatient beds and in the community continues to be their primary focus, and they need to raise millions every year to do this.
