Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi, I'm Lewis, I am 9 years old. I will be walking 26 laps of our house using my walking frame in order to raise money for Dogs for Good.

When I was born I didn’t get enough oxygen to breathe properly and so my brain didn’t work as well as it should, this affected my ability to move and is a condition known as Cerebral Palsy, it meant that when I grew bigger my legs didn’t work as well as they should and I have trouble moving them.

As I have grown up I have really only wanted one thing which is to be able to walk on my own but this isn’t just going to happen like it does for most people. I have to work really hard to build up my strength and have had to have an operation to make my legs work better.

I had the operation about 3 years ago, it was called Selective Dorsal Rhysotoamy but I just call it SDR as its easier and I've no idea how to spell it! There aren’t many people who have this operation and so I was really lucky, they have to cut a hole in your back and then rewire your nerves to make your legs work – its really clever and really painful.

I didn’t know it at the time but the operation was the easy part as since then I have to do 3 hours of physio a week and stretches on my legs in the morning and at night. Its really hard but I need to do it to build up the strength in my legs and muscles and to try to teach them how to work better and how to walk.

My next aim is to walk for longer and further with my sticks and frame which will also build up my strength. Once I have a lot more work and built that strength in my legs then I hope they will work on their own and I won't need my sticks and I can take my first step on my own. It might take me time to get there but I am determined to do it.

As part of my physio I have decided to take on the 2.6 challenge which is happening this weekend as this is when the London Marathon was supposed to happen. I will be walking 26 laps of our house over the next week using my walking frame to raise money for Dogs for Good. Dogs for Good are a charity who provide assistance dogs for children and adults with disabilities like me. In October 2018 I got my own assistance dog called Waldo and he has helped me to start to become more independent. I would love to give others the opportunity to get their own dog like me and this money will help them to train more puppies

Thank you so much for reading and if you are able to, please donate.
