Story

My name is Georgie and I am a student in my last year at Queen's College School in London.  As a student I study History of Art and will be going on to study it some more at university in 2015. Some people may think 'why not donate to a charity that supports people with cancer or helps starving children in Africa.  Of course these charities are incredibly important and last term, Queen's College raised a huge amount of money for Teenage Cancer Trust.  But I believe that this is also important.  Queen's College wants to raise money to keep Van Dyck's Self Portrait in the UK.  Anthony Van Dyck’s final self-portrait (1640-41) is a work of huge international importance. It is one of just three self-portraits he is known to have created in Britain, and the only one of these ever likely to be made available for acquisition by a British public collection. This enigmatic and intimate portrait has previously hung in private collections, so this is a rare opportunity for us to buy it for the nation, so that everyone can enjoy it.  The Campaign needs to raise £12.5m, however obviously Queen's College is not going to be able to raise all of that by ourselves.  Nevertheless it is still hugely important to contribute and I really hope that people out there find the cause just as worthwhile as we do.
