Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page for Diabetes UK.
Ten years ago Georgie was hospitalised and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Over the years, Georgie has been able to recover from her hospitalisation and has lived life to the fullest thanks to the continued research by Diabetes UK, which helps improve the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes!
"I feel very lucky that with an active lifestyle and a great support network my diabetes hasn’t had a huge effect on my life. Although the constant management including finger prick tests and injections are annoying, it’s just a part of life now. However for many people they’re not so lucky and struggle much more mentally and physically with it which is why Diabetes UK is vital. Not only is it working tireless to find a cause, but it gives invaluable support to people struggling." - Georgie
We (Georgie and Poppy) have decided to raise money for Diabetes UK to fund the life saving work that they do! We will be completing the 3 Peaks challenge in the UK (June 11th - June 12th). The hikes include:
- Snowdon, in Wales (1085m)
- Scafell Pike, in England (978m)
- Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1345m)
Type 1 diabetes is a serious condition lifelong condition, that effects 8% of the UK population. It causes the blood glucose (sugar) level to be too high because your body can't make a hormone called insulin. This happens as the body attacks the cells in your pancreas that make the insulin, meaning you can’t produce any at all.
Individuals with type 1 diabetes need daily injections of insulin to keep their blood glucose levels under control. Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage your heart, eyes, feet and kidneys. These are known as the complications of diabetes. These long-term complications can be prevented by receiving the right treatment and care.
Managing type 1 diabetes can take time and for some they struggle to manage it. Diabetes support those diagnosed with type 1 diabetes with many daily tasks such as; exercising, carb counting, eating a health and balanced diet and making positive lifestyle changes.
They also provide information about treatments and keeping your blood sugar levels within your target range, so you can live well with your condition and reduce your risk of developing complications in the future. As well as being available for emotional support, as diabetes does not just affect people physically, as it can impact on many normal aspects of life such as; meal times, school, driving, travelling and living alone.
There’s no known cure for type 1 diabetes right now. But money donated to Diabetes UK is used by scientists to look into new treatments called immunotherapies. These could help to prevent, stop and cure the condition. They are also putting more funding into building upon what we already know about individuals' with type 1 diabetes' immune systems.
