Georgie's Alzheimer"s trek 26 walk page

Mount Kilimanjaro · 6 June 2021
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice. With someone developing dementia every 3 minutes there's one tough fight ahead.
My Kilimanjaro climb was cancelled and instead I will be training to walk 2 marathons - London June 5 and the Lakes District 8 August 2021
MY STORY
My Dad was diagnosed with the cruel Alzheimer’s disease 9 years ago & sadly passed away 26 January 2021; after a short coronavirus illness which took all the strength he had. After a terrible fall in August 2019 his dementia accelerated so quickly and he never got the chance to return home. Throughout the 2020 covid lockdown he became even more fragile and depressed due to limited amount of social contact allowed. Heartbreakingly I last saw him alive August 2020. He no longer knew me as his daughter, only recognising a smile that made him happy and asked if I was a part of him. It's such a cruel disease.
Witnessing the tremendous work at my Dad’s Care Home, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, I’m eternally grateful. I’m also appreciative of all the amazing support we’ve had from the Dementia UK Hub in Lancashire; my dad, his wife Enid and our family faced many challenges and we would of never been able to cope with what was needed to be put in place if it wasn't for Dementia UK.
I'm doing these treks to raise awareness, to support those caring for everyone diagnose with Alzheimer and carers, and for my dear Dad, who struggled everyday. I want to help in some way to make it easier for this amazing society to continue to do their amazing work.
These marathons are not the only challenge - being diagnosed myself with Ankylosing Spondylitis and Scoliosis in 2020, you'll also be supporting my drive and motivation to complete my own personal challenge and not let my illness define or restrict my goals to help others.
Here's the deal - you sponsor any amount you can, I'll take on the challenges of a lifetime and together we'll change lives.
Thank you for taking time to read my Dad's and my own story.
Wish me luck!
Georgie
BTW - all your kind donations go to support Alzheimers not me and theres a prize draw to win a Sonos Move :)
