India Cycle Challenge 2004 · 26 November 2004 ·

Each day in the UK five families are told their child has cancer or leukaemia. From that moment on their lives will never be the same again. Most children will survive, some will die, but the scars on every family will remain. CLIC's role is to try and help these children and their families cope and keep life as normal as possible. It offers an all-embracing approach including practical hands-on care, clinical services, financial and emotional support. CLIC has joined together with Sargent Cancer Care for Children to become the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

Last year, during a lunch date with a friend I've known nearly all my life, I was amazed and inspired! In 2000 she had cycled round Jordon to raise money for research into infertitlity, and in November she was setting off to cycle round Vietnam to raise money for CLIC - Challenging Cancer and Leukaemia in Children. I found myself saying, 'that is amazing! If she can do it then so can I'! The only difference is that despite owning a bike for about fifteen years - romantic ideas of bikes and dogs had not worked out!- I had never really ridden one even as a child!

At Christmas I blew the cobwebs off my bike. My first foray was down our farm track. It was an exhausting two mile ride, with frequent stops, wondering how on earth anyone could cycle three, let a lone 300 miles! Was I completely mad to think I would ever be able to do it! Robin came to my aid and since then we have been going out regularly. Our longest ride being 58 miles to Gloucestershire! A change from the Chiltern hills!

CLIC realised cancer in children was different from that in adults and therefore a different approach was needed. CLIC tries to help these children and families cope by keeping life as normal as possible. It offers free, self-catering home from home accommodation for families whilst their children are receiving treatment. These are close to Paediatric Oncology Centres with specialist doctors, nurses and play specialists. It allows parents, children and siblings to stay together for as long as necessary during periods of treatment.

For me this will be a huge challenge, a leap into the unknown! I have sent my registration fee of £340 off, and am now trying to raise a minimum of £2,600 for Click. I will be contributing at least £600 myself. So I am now committed to cycle 300 miles over six days round Rajastan, starting from the Taj Mahal in late November. The longest ride being 75 miles in one day, followed by 60 the next.. with camp beds at night...

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: CLIC will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. Many thanks for your support.
