Team David Kilimanjaro Trek 2018 · 9 October 2018

10,500 people in the UK have ataxia which is a progressive neurological condition that disrupts the messages sent from our brains to our muscles that are used to move, speak, listen and see. Ataxia UK funds research into finding treatments and a cure and provide support until they are found.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi, I'm Geraint, 39 years old and living in South Wales. I was diagnosed with Freidriech's Ataxia (FA) around 10 years. FA affects my balance, co-ordination and mobility.

In October it is my goal to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. I will be climbing using an adapted wheelchair called a Mountain Trike.

I will be joined on the climb by former IBF Cruiserweight World Champion boxer and Boxing Social pundit Glenn McCrory. Glenn's brother David was also diagnosed with FA and is the inspiration behind the Team David name. Also climbing with me is my Dad (Clive) and one of my oldest freinds Ashley Pearce.

In preparation for Kili I have already completed a half Tough Mudder and climbed Sugar Loaf in the Brecon Beacons with the help of friends. Future plans include holding a charity evening, practise using the trike climbing Pen Y Fan, Snowdon and taking part in the full Tough Mudder.

Ataxia is quite rare, with not that many people being aware of it. Hopefully, this challenge will raise the profile of Ataxia UK and bring much needed funds and awareness.
