Story

Following on from the success of Fr. Tony Coote's phenomenal Walk While You Can campaign in 2018 and to mark the 1st anniversary of his passing on 28th August we are asking you Walk While You Can in your area. It is imperative for us to keep our MND Community safe and with this in mind our planned Walk While You Can 5k event in the Phoenix Park won't be going ahead this September as planned. However you can still help us get through what continues to be a very challenging time for people living with Motor Neurone Disease. 80% of people with MND lose their speech but a communication aid like an iPad can become their voice. Supplying an iPad, with a specialised communication app, enables people with MND to continue to speak to the people they love as well as communicate with the outside world. Currently, we can't all walk together but we are still in this together and together we can continue to make a difference and walk our own 5k. Hope starts with one step; change happens with many.

About the charity

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is the only organisation of its kind in the country providing specialised services to families affected by this terminal condition. The Association cannot slow the progression of MND or change the outcome but we can alleviate the feelings of isolation and frustration. We offer consistent support to approximately 400 families across Ireland who otherwise would have nowhere else to turn. Everybody with MND has different needs at different stages of their journey and we are here to help and guide them every step of the way. The services provided by the IMNDA are immediate and free of charge for everyone registered with the Association. Key services include: • Access to 4 outreach nurses directly employed by the IMNDA and funded entirely by donations. • Access to a home care grant. • Access to specialised equipment on loan (e.g. wheelchairs, hoists, communication aids etc). • Access to funding towards counselling sessions for the person with MND and family members. Your support is absolutely vital. More than 86% of our income comes from fundraising and donations.
