In May 2014 my otherwise fit and healthy Uncle Deano had a huge and prolonged seizure. He was rushed to hospital and following a further seizure ,tests and an MRI he was sadly diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour. This stage 4 tumour ,known as GBM4 is the most aggressive type of brain cancer, with limited treatments that are successful and only has a median survival rate of 15- 16months.
Deano underwent surgery, 6 weeks of intensive radiotherapy and 6 months of chemo therapy. He refused to become a statstic and faced this with the utmost courage, strength and determination. He said he didn’t want to be in the 15-16 month “club” and for 6 1⁄2 years this was indeed true .Life was lived the best he could despite not being able to return to the job he loved as a scaffolder, or being able to drive. With his wife Angie and their son they made the most of every day and enjoyed holidays and days out.
Sadly December 2019 saw the return of the tumour and despite a second surgery, awake crainiotomy this time, the tumour continues to grow and now treatment is palliative only.
Deano is still smiling despite this awful time and is being cared for at home by his family and the St Luke`s team. He hopes for a cure for this dreadful disease , however only 2% of the total cancer research spend is received by the Brain Tumour Charity despite the fact brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer.
Sadly Deano passed away in January after a brave and strong fight..he was a warrior through out and his memory will live on ...
Please continue to donate in his name to try to raise awareness and research into this devastating illness.. thank you xx
