Story

Help the Chron and Macmillan raise £1.55m for a new cancer unit at Northampton General Hospital

Following the success of the Chronicle & Echo’s partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support 12 years ago, which resulted in the people of Northamptonshire raising £1.5 million to build a new Centre for Oncology at the hospital, we have teamed up once again to help fund a new haematology unit at Northampton General Hospital.

The new unit, which opened earlier this year, is an enlarged, purpose-built facility that offers a relaxing, comfortable and diversionary environment to its patients, as well as the extra space needed to reduce waiting times and make life more comfortable for both patients and staff.

Ward sister Nettie Steele said: "It’s absolutely amazing. It’s so beautiful. When we first started seeing it being built we couldn’t quite comprehend how it would be, but seeing it now it is much more than we could ever have wished for. It’s so spacious, airy and light, and there is privacy and dignity for our patients."

The total cost of the build is £2.2 million. With the hospital having contributed £650,000, the charity needs to raise £1.55 million to ensure the new unit can remain open for those who need it most.

Thanks to the support of county businesses, residents and community groups, our fund-raising is close to the £1 million, and we are appealing for people to donate to help push us over that mark, from where we will be really close to hitting our target.
