Story

Birmingham Children's Hospital is close to the heart of GGR Communications and their employees for many different reasons. Our Managing Director, Adrian Clinton-Watkins, explains his personal view as to why we have chosen Birmingham Children's Hospital as GGR's Charity of the Year:

"Our second daughter Sophie was born with a very serious undiagnosed Congential Heart Defect, TGV - her arteries had developed on the wrong sides of the heart and only a VSD, a hole in the wall between the ventricles of the heart had allowed her to survive. At just 8 weeks old, this resulted in a sudden trip to our local A&E followed by an overnight transfer to Birmingham Children's Hospital. She was quickly operated on to improve her immediate condition with a view to having a more serious operation when she was older and more able to cope. Just after her 2nd birthday, one of the UK's leading children's cardiac surgeons, located at Birmingham Children's Hospital, carried out a full arterial switch, closed her VSD and successfully repaired her heart in an 8 hour operation. Today, Sophie is a fit and active 10 year old thanks to the specialist care they were able to provide"

About the charity

It's bewildering and unsettling for anyone going into hospital but especially for children and that is why we are a fundraising hospital. We raise funds to enhance the experience of our patients by providing state of the art medical equipment and facilities and creating a child-friendly environment.
