London Marathon 2022 · 2 October 2022 ·

Christopher Horn was an exceptionally talented trumpet player, who died at the age of 25, having suffered from depression. During his relatively short career, he played with groups such as the London Sinfonietta, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia. Up until the time of his death Chris had been working as guest principal trumpet with The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Chris's passion for music was heightened during two formative years as principal trumpet with The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. During his time with the orchestra, Chris co-founded a chamber ensemble - Onyx Brass. Chris made many friends whilst studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at the Royal Academy of music, and whilst playing in the European Union Youth Orchestra, Onyx Brass and the many other professional ensembles. Tragically in July 1999, Chris took his own life. The Trust was set up in his memory and supports young brass players in the advancement of their studies.

Story

As many of you will know, sadly my brother died over 20 years having suffered from depression for a few years.  The period following his death was not easy but my parents were determined something good would come from the tragedy that we went through. Out of this period of grief, The Christopher Horn Trust was born.

For the last 20 years or so, the Trust has supported musicians at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Royal Academy to further their musical studies. I have been a trustee since the inception of the trust, along with some of my brother’s friends. I know they all miss him dearly and often think about what life would be like if he was still here.

Two and a half years ago, I took up running through a local running group. Not only is the exercise physically beneficial, but the mental benefits are great too, something I wish Chris has found back in the day.  When I signed up for the London Marathon I never dreamed that I would get a ballot place so imagine my shock when the email came through to say I’d been succesful!

My running friends are fully supportive of my goal to run the full course and who else could I run in memory of but my baby brother. Chris, the whole 26.2 miles is for you!

Thank you for reading this and whatever pennies you can spare will be going to a great cause.

Much love

Gill xx
