My Story - Asthma + Me
When I was younger at around the age of 6 or 7, my mum rushed me to hospital during a suspected asthma attack. I was diagnosed with asthma and have been using inhalers every day since then.
Despite being prescribed the usual “blue” and “brown” inhalers, my symptoms were never truly under control, wheezing and coughing were pretty much the norm for me.
It was almost 20 years later when I changed GP Practice that this changed. I was lucky enough to have regular asthma reviews with the practice nurse who recognised immediately that my asthma wasn’t under control and changed my medication. This nurse changed my quality of life. I’m now able to sleep without waking up wheezing, I get up in the morning able to breathe and with more energy. I’m able exercise more confidently and effectively.
Asthma can’t be completely cured but it can be controlled. The treatment we receive shouldn’t be left down to luck or where we live, everyone suffering with Asthma deserves the same treatment. Which is where Asthma + Lung UK come in…
Skydive for Asthma + Lung UK
In October I will be participating in a skydive alongside a bunch of other brave (or maybe slightly crazy!) Fletcherians to raise money for Asthma + Lung UK.
Earlier this year, I was a spectator at a sky dive my sister was taking part in. Despite not being great with heights, I have been considering taking the leap myself ever since. So when the opportunity came up to do this and also support charity, I jumped at the chance.
Poor lung health is the UK's 3rd biggest cause of death - 1 in 5 people in the UK will suffer with a lung condition. In my immediate family alone, 5 of us, including me and we suspect my youngest son, Max, suffer with Asthma.
Alongside supporting many people suffering from asthma and lung related conditions, Asthma + Lung UK also invest in tackling the cause of lung conditions - By campaigning for cleaner air, improved treatment/diagnosis and investing in vital lifesaving research.
