Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On September 14th 2013 I will be attempting to complete the Horseman Extreme Triathlon in Dartmoor National Park.
All the information for the event can be viewed through this link http://www.endurancelife.com/event-new.asp?series=65
I have been running ultra marathons for a good few years now, so thought it was time I went a bit more extreme.
So I'm doing an Ironman. It'll be tough - a 3.8 km swim in a 14C lake, followed by a 180 km bike ride with 3.7 km of climb through spectacular countryside, finishing with a 42km offroad marathon over rugged terrain. Perhaps I'll even manage a couple of pushups at the end. Then thirteen hours and a million snicker bars later, I'll emerge a battered wreck.
Whilst this will be a huge physical and mental challenge to myself, I'm doing it to raise awareness of the bravery and compassion that organisations like the Sea Shepherd (http://www.seashepherd.org/) show, to protect our marine ecosystems and wildlife.
Figures vary, but there were over half a million individual blue whales just over a century ago. Now there are less than 2000 in the entire world. It's illegal to hunt whales, yet it continues and 'officials' turn a blind eye, in favour of short-term economic gain.
And so Sea Shepherd's direct actions tactics, whilst often miconstrued by the media, are now required in a world where politics and diplomacy no longer have any sway. Politicians and policy makers talk, but these smug "right, honourable gentlemen" do not have the will or the passion to bring about real change. Our world is collapsing around us, and so it's up to us to fight fire with fire!
So I've picked a fundraising target of £2001. The extra pound represents one of the blue whales which hopefully will be saved this year.
The event is going to push me beyond the limits of endurance and I'll likely enter some other dimension during the course of the day, but knowing that your donations will be helping in some way towards the protection of our beautiful marine life will carry me through.
