Story
A message from Cam... My amazing Mam (Thelma) was diagnosed with cancer at the end of May last year. She was full of life and was always looking out for other people. Throughout her life she raised a lot of money for various charities and took on various challenges. From the Great North Swim to trekking the Great Wall of China. Even sponsoring a Senegalese child from a toddler until he was too old to sponsor. Although you're not supposed to, nothing was going to stop her and she went and visited him and his family in 2018. She was greeted by the whole village as she'd not only helped him but had raised money to pay for things needed in the village too. In her memory Team Nana have decided to take on a few challenges ourselves to give back to a charity that has become close to our hearts. Maggie’s Newcastle is a cancer support centre just across from the Freeman Hospital. As soon as we walked through the doors we felt a sense of calm. It’s a beautiful place and the staff are there to support you or you can just sit down and have a coffee and chill out. When Mam was asleep or having treatment we used to say “we’re just going to Maggies for a mooch!" It was such a comfort to us knowing that we could go and sit in a non-medical environment and get support if or when we needed it. Our year of challenges starts in February with Angela (Mams sister) running 50 miles throughout the month. 11th February, I (Cam) will be cycling in the gym for 24 hours, with my only breaks being for the toilet. Summer (Mams Grandchild) will be doing the Great North Swim. It was supposed to be Mam and Summer but Jenn (Mams sister) will now be using my Mams place. My brother (Glenn) and Jenn will be taking on the Great North Run on 10th September. On the 1st November 2022 we got a call to get to the hospital where we were told Mam had 4/5 hours to live. She fought for another 7 days and gave us more memories and moments we'll never forget. 13:15 on the 8th November she fell asleep for the last time. So for my second challenge, I've decided to run 4 miles every 5 hours for 7 days in memory of her fight in those final moments in hospital. It costs £2,400 to run Maggie’s Newcastle for one day and we would love to raise enough to pay for a day and dedicate 1st December to Mam – her birthday. Anything you could donate to support us would be truly appreciated by us all and I know it would mean the world to Maggie’s. Please help us to help them.
