Event: Spinnaker Tower abseil
We train amazing hearing dogs to transform the lives of deaf people

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We have chosen to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower to challenge ourselves and to give back to the charity and dogs that have changed our lives, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, Rodney and Sally.

HD Rodney – My Hero

Rodney entered my (Elizabeth's) life in July 2017 as a 12-week-old, gangly, liver and white cocker spaniel.  Little did I know that he would change my world.

He came into my life when I was at my lowest point.  I was suffering from PTSD and really struggling.  I had left my job in special education, where I had been supporting children with diverse needs.  My aim was always to help them become the best they could be and I thought training Rodney would be similar.  I would train him to become the best he could be and become a hearing dog.  Rodney had other ideas.  I think he thought his role was to help me become the best I could be and little by little he worked his magic.  He rose to every challenge put before him with enthusiasm and courage. Even when he needed two operations on his legs he kept going.  He was simply an inspiring dog.

Last year we were lucky enough to visit Rodney and his partner and see the magic continuing.  They are as one, a team going out and about in the world.  He is doing for his partner what he did with me, rising to the challenge and enjoying every moment.

Rodney I am doing this for you.

Sally (aka Sallywag) wiggled into our lives in 2013 as a hearing dog in training, but she simply wasn’t content with helping just one deaf person, she insisted on helping as many as she could. So instead of moving in with a recipient, she stayed with us, the Jones family, and began her long and varied career as a Client Support Dog. She meets applicants to show them what they need from a hearing dog, and in doing so inspires many people to add spaniels to their list of preferred breeds! She also dabbles in demonstrations, pheasant chasing and some agility, and spends her off hours snoozing, cuddling and wiggling in hope of treats. When James left home, Sally accompanied him and the two are just about inseparable, with their sidekick, Louise the cat, also a member of the Hearing Dogs team.
