PRESS RELEASE FOR MY 260 MILE, 150 LOCKS 10 DAY CANOE FOR ANTHONY NOLAN

Local man faces 260 mile's and 150 locks solo challenge in aid of Anthony Nolan and  Children's Hospice South West, Precious Lives Appeal.
Gordon Taylor will face the challenge of a lifetime this August when he sets off on 'Gordon Taylor's Paddle 4 Life August 2011' event, in aid of Anthony Nolan, the charity that takes back lives from leukaemia by recruiting to and managing the UK's most successful bone marrow register, and also for The Children's Hospice South West, Precious Lives Appeal.
Gordon , who lives nr Cheadle in Staffordshire, decided to represent Anthony Nolan because having been a bone marrow donor with them in the past, knows how much they need the support.
In August 2009, myself and Kevin Barlow completed a canoe trip of
200 miles and 84 locks in 8 days, in a home built canoe named 'Chazellie' after my two daughters, raising £1810.
After a break of 12 months I came across the website joeway.co.uk.  If you visit this site you just can't help being inspired by the story of Joe Way and how far his parents have gone to inspire other people to raise funds for any charity.  It was because of this that I decided to look at doing another event.
I built the two man canoe for the last event and have built a one man 12ft canoe named 'Kayla Grace' after my first grandchild, as I will be travelling completely alone.
I think that I have set myself a real challenge.  I will be setting off on foot from my village, so will need to pull my canoe(on a set of wheels I built), and two weeks worth of supplies approximately 1 mile to the canal at Froghall, then paddle 130 miles and 75 locks to Cropredy Folk Festival, where I will have 3 days to recover before the return journey, totalling 260 miles and 150 locks for the whole event.
I will be doing this on behalf of Anthony Nolan, but in gratitude to the family of Joe Way, for their support, I am asking people to sponsor the 150 locks in their name, through my 'Penny a Lock' appeal, the funds of which will go to thir chosen charity 'The Precious Lives Appeal'.
This event is run at zero cost to the funds, as all equipment and sign writing needed to complete the journey is funded by myself so 100% of all money raised will go to the charities.
At present I have raised £1,000 pledged to Anthony Nolan and £500 to the Penny a Lock appeal.
I know how tough things are at the moment, which makes every penny pledged feel that much more special to me.  It just shows how much people care.
I invite everyone to take the time to check out www.anthonynolan.org.uk and to read the story of Joe Way at www.joeway.co.uk
Gordon's eldest daughter, Charlotte says "I am so proud of my dad, he is an inspiration to me, both myself and my fiance joined the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Register, as we have seen what a difference one person can make to someone else's life, and we hope that one day we will be a match and save a life like my dad."
There are 1,400 people in the UK and 15,000 people worldwide in need of a bone marrow transplant, which is usually their last hope of survival in the fight against leukaemia and other blook related diseases.  Anthony Nolan is an independent charity and relies on public donations to continue saving lives.
