Story

Team Racing Welfare are taking part in the Great Racing Welfare Cycle Challenge at Cheltenham from Saturday 16th - Sunday 17th July. Aimee, Alice, Katy and Khadija will be setting off from the parade ring at Cheltenham at midday on Saturday and cycling for 24 hours nonstop until midday on Sunday 17th July. The 30km route is gruelling. This will be no leisurely pedal. We have some pretty tough hills to climb, and we’ll be rotating in shifts to rest between laps and make it through the whole 24 hours.

Racing Welfare provides human welfare services providing
professional guidance and practical help to the stud, stable and racecourse staff, and those in a broad range of associated roles whose dedication is vital to the wellbeing of racing. The work of Racing Welfare is dependent on donations and successful fundraising activities.

Katy Ferguson - Welfare Officer, South East

My name is Katy and I work for Racing Welfare as a Welfare Officer. In my role and personal life, I have seen first-hand how the support we provide can make a huge difference to people’s lives.

I decided after experiencing a traumatic incident myself while working in Racing that I wanted to do a job where I could give back to others and use my own experience to help others through their own dark times.

My sister Jenny had a promising career ahead of her as a Jockey before experiencing a life-changing fall when her horse was brought down in a five-furlong sprint race. She suffered three brain haemorrhages and was left with permanent brain damage. The effects of her brain injury had a huge impact on her life and continue to so. Without the support of charities like Racing Welfare, I don’t think she would have got the aftercare she needed and wouldn’t be where she is today. Jenny still faces many challenges but is thriving and has an amazing job training horses in Dubai.  I have learned so much from this experience, and this is what lead me to the career I have now have with Racing Welfare.

I still ride out and keep myself fit but I don’t think I’ve sat on a bike properly since I was a teenager!! I am cycling to challenge myself, just like my sister has to do every day and to raise funds for a charity I truly believe in. Please support team Racing Welfare with whatever you can afford 😊

Aimee Hockley-Righton – Regional Welfare Manager, East

I am so proud to work for Racing Welfare and I am so
inspired by the people who are helped by this remarkable charity.

This is not an industry for the faint hearted. It is a lifestyle not just a job. The mental and physical toll is something that Racing Welfare are so good at helping to support – keeping racings people going.

It is going to be a very tough challenge – but we will all give our all and any donation will be used to help those in need. Please give  what you can afford.

Alice Campbell

I’m 43 years old and married to trainer, Andrew Campbell. I’ve worked with horses nearly all my working life. First for Andrew Nicholson eventing and then working in NH racing for nearly 20 years. I am currently working for Nigel Twiston Davies.

I have entered the cycle challenge, because Racing Welfare helped me get back to full fitness after breaking my leg and rupturing my pcl ligament and want to give something back. Please donate as much as you can for this worthy cause.
