Story
Between lockdowns last summer I was very fortunate to have been matched with a beautiful yellow Labrador Autism Assistance dog called Makka Pakka. Over the last eight months, I have been working with a wonderful local trainer, who has been helping me to fine tune his training to make us a very strong team and give me greater independence and freedom.
Before Makka, I did not go out alone and would often get overwhelmed by the smallest of things, such as changes of my routines or within the environment, people, noises, smells, etc. With Makka by my side keeping me safe , I feel much more able to cope. Makka is trained to interrupt behaviours, give me reassurance and deep pressure therapy he can also find me clear areas away from people so I can regain composure. I have undertaken my first ever independent journey on a bus to town and back. I know I am very privileged to have Makka and want to raise money so that other people can also benefit for the wonderful life changing assistance that these amazing dogs provide.
The Covid-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic effect on charities, with the cancellation of thousands of events and the loss of billions in income. At a time when vulnerable members of society need them most, charities have had to cut services, furlough staff and some have even shut down. Captain Tom stepped up to help, taking on his famous walk to support the NHS Covid-19 appeal and inspiring millions to donate to the cause. I will be celebrating the extraordinary spirit of Captain Tom my way and help my chosen charity.
