Brighton Marathon 2013 · 14 April 2013 ·

Right now, people in Africa suffer from a severe lack of medical resources. They cannot afford to buy the medical supplies they desperately need. With your help, we can send regular consignments of medical aid to around 100 health units in sub-Saharan Africa. www.intercare.org.uk

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

After I ran the Brighton Marathon in April 2011, I promised myself to raise money for a charity if ever I run a marathon again. I remember thinking to myself afterwards that the pain I experienced had to be for a good reason next time round! I have signed up to run the Brighton Marathon on 14th April 2013, and this time, it is for a good reason!.

The charity I have chosen to support is Inter Care. Inter Care (licensed by the Enviromental Agency) sends unused UK NHS prescription medicines, for Humanitarian Aid to over 100 remote health centres in 6 countries in Africa. One of the places where Inter Care has made a difference is a very remote Pirimiti community hospital in Zomba, Malawi, Southern Africa. My dear grand mother lives in one of the villages some 30km away - which is her nearest health centre!

Situated towards the south of Malawi, It is somewhat isolated, and serves the scattered population, but provides excellent services with some remarkable success stories to its credit, including coping with a massive cholera outbreak.

There are 40,000 people living in 80 villages in the catchment area. They walk or bicycle to the hospital some as far as 30km. There are now 58 beds in 5 wards which cover male, female, children, maternity and a nutrition unit and an out patients department. It also runs outreach child immunisation clinics. The hospital has around 150 maternity cases each month, 10-15 of these being premature births.
The soil of the area is poor and dry, so malnutrition is a common problem and the Health Centre has a nutritional rehabilitation unit as well as offering VCT (Voluntary Counselling and Testing) for HIV / AIDS, ante-natal clinics and outreach vaccination clinics.

My fund raising will help towards the cost of sending medicines for this great cause, so please sponsor me, thank you.
