Story
Stefán Karl Stefánsson was a popular actor hailing from Iceland. He is best known for his portrayal of the character Robbie Rotten in the TV show LazyTown. He sadly passed away in 2018, but not before capturing the hearts and minds of many.
After a fundraising campaign was started to cover his care, the internet acted. The character, as well as the song "We Are Number One" because deeply ingrained in meme culture. A huge amount of money was raised, and he remained grateful throughout. Not only was he grateful for the support, but he embraced the memes that were created.
When Stefán was taken, a man was taken. He was a husband and a father, we should never forget that detail. The response from the internet was once again fantastic. He is one of the few 'memes' that transcended humour. People all around the world were rooting for him, and were deeply saddened when he left. His amazing wife Steinunn spoke of her struggles leading up to his passing, and so much more. See the video of her speech here: https://youtu.be/HhoUvCkva_U
So that is what this is about. I'm doing this race one last time to raise money for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, per her speech. Stefán may no longer be with us, but he'll always be number one. This foundation helped the family a lot at this time, but their work continues beyond one noteworthy case. All the people still going through this, as well as those who are dealing with grief of their own, this is for them.
In June 2018, I had a stroke at the age of 23 that affected my dominant side. It was a major shock as I am by all accounts a healthy individual. The rehabilitation process remains a daily challenge for me.
But I have also been training for this race. Which has extra rehab on top. The race is around 10 miles at night time, featuring two hills and a lot of questionable terrain. I found this rather difficult before the stroke, but I'm up to the challenge. Oh and I'll be dressed as Robbie Rotten. Naturally.
