Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon 2022 · 20 February 2022

Our Club is part of a worldwide organisation called Rotary International, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs. Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto 'Service Above Self'. Rotarians are men and women who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives. A Rotary club contains a diverse group of people from the community that the club serves. As a member of a Rotary club, you have the opportunity to give something back, to give hope to those less fortunate and to make lives worthwhile and fulfilled.

Story

I am a 74-year-old who had a serious accident in October 2020 while running, resulting in a broken shoulder and leaving me unable to walk properly.  I needed three operations, several consultations with nerve specialists and an intensive course of physiotherapy.  Despite being in the worst of this pandemic, the NHS did not let me down.  My shoulder is virtually back to normal and I am now able to run again.  In gratitude to the dozens of staff who looked after me so well, I am raising money for the local MTW NHS Charity by running this year's Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon, one of the toughest in the country.  I have other medical conditions, which are being managed by medication, but I have had the consent and support of the medical specialists to undertake this challenge.

I am also a member of Tunbridge Wells Rotary Club, which is celebrating its centenary this year.  In recognition, we are raising money for outdoor adult gym equipment to be installed in Dunorlan Park, the biggest and most famous of recreational areas in Tunbridge Wells.

My intention is that all donations made to my appeal will be donated 50-50 to the MTW Charity and the TW Rotary Centenary Appeal, via the Tunbridge Wells Rotary Club Trust.
